If your firm is investigating how to best protect an Elevator Machine Room (EMR) with an elevator fire protection system, there are some interesting facts to consider.
Regardless of the fire protection system – water sprinkler, dry chemical, clean agent systems, wet chemical systems, and CO2 systems – it may not be suitable in an elevator maintenance room that has slab penetration, which is the standard for traction elevator systems. The shaft is vented through the elevator maintenance room in older traction elevator EMRs.
An aerosol elevator fire suppression system may be the most effective way to protect humans in an EMR. Our system is an aerosol with a potassium base which can suppress a fire. Aerosol is non, oxygen depleting, non-toxic, and nonhazardous to people if they are exposed to the discharge. It will not affect the equipment under normal conditions. Since aerosol is lighter than the surrounding air it would float inside the elevator maintenance room, remaining outside the hoist way. Our fire suppression is an engineered system using aerosol contained in small canisters inside the EMR with no storage tanks or piping. Per NFPA 2010, it is categorized as a condensed aerosol system.
